How the Tilly Pass inspection works?
The Tilly Pass is a detailed inspection of key trailer components, including lights, brakes, chassis and drawbar. If any parts need attention, repairs or replacements are carried out to bring the trailer up to the required roadworthy standard.
Once the work is complete and the trailer passes inspection, a Tilly Pass certificate is fitted to the rear of the trailer so it can be clearly seen by operators and other road users.
The certificate is valid for 12 months, after which the trailer should be inspected again and the certificate renewed.

Why trailer maintenance matters?
Trailer maintenance is an essential part of farm safety and legal compliance. Agriculture remains one of the most dangerous industries in the UK, so keeping trailers and towable equipment in safe working order is vital. Under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, employers have a duty to provide and maintain equipment that is safe, efficient and in good repair. Regular trailer inspections can help reduce the risk of incidents, lower the chance of costly breakdowns and support a more reliable operation during busy periods.
The Tilly Pass scheme has been developed to support maintenance in line with the relevant legal and industry standards, including annual inspection intervals and proper record keeping. It also helps improve the condition and resale value of second-hand trailers by giving owners a clear maintenance history and visible proof of inspection.
Important Safety Note: An annual inspection does not replace regular maintenance. Throughout the year, operators must perform daily and weekly checks as recommended by the manufacturer. You can access these quickly via the free Head to Tow trailer safety app. Always ensure any required repairs are carried out by a fully trained technician, especially after a trailer has been exposed to exceptional circumstances.
